Epicenter
Epicenter and the Jesus Earthquake
Matthew’s gospel tells us that when Jesus died, “at that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.” Then and now, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus – stands at the epicenter of God’s renewing work with human beings.
When asked about his vision for Epicenter, Pastor Paul Nixon says: “Epicenter is part of a bigger movement, the spiritual and social renewal of central cities across North America – a God thing. I look forward to the fun of seeing the difference that Jesus’ values will make in the personal lives, the families, the schools, and the neighborhoods of Washington DC and northern Virginia over the next few years. God is going to pull some diverse people together spiritually and join their energy and gifts together to create something remarkable inside the Beltway.”
In the first century, from the epicenter of the Jesus Earthquake, everything changed. Human beings discovered that the Spirit of God is not content to remain cloistered in a sanctuary, but is a God of the streets, living and moving among everyday people. Spiritually, thousands and then millions of first century people were transformed, in waves, moving out from Jerusalem, to other cities, down the highways of the Roman Empire, to the ends of the earth. New faith communities formed at the cultural and economic crossroads of each region, ultimately taming an empire and impacting nearly every people group on earth.
Epicenter Church seeks to be grounded in the original Jesus Earthquake. We are basing our ministry in various urban neighborhoods of twenty-first century Washington DC and Northern Virginia. We trust and pray that the grace and spiritual renewal we discover will roll far beyond DC to bless other cities and peoples.
Epicenter Church is a new Christian Faith community focused on serving the people who live in the urban expanse of greater Washington DC.
